A wart is a skin infection caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). A wart causes rough, skin-colored bumps to form on the skin. The HPV virus that causes warts is contagious. Warts are most common on the hands, but can also appear on the feet, face and around the genitals.

Warts on the soles of the feet usually occur in areas where there is contact with the ground. With the pressure caused by stepping, the outward cauliflower-like growth, which is typical of warts, does not occur on the soles of the feet and the thick sole skin grows underneath and hardens.

Treatment may include cryotherapy, electrocauterization, laser treatments, and medications.
